LPS corals
intermediateTorch coral
Euphyllia glabrescens
Quick reference
Min tank size
30 US gal
30 gal min — enough water volume for parameter stability. Single colony OK in nano (10 gal+) with vigilant testing; recommended 30+ for multi-coral systems with adequate buffer.
PAR
75–150 µmol/m²/s
Flow
medium
Placement
Mid-tank or lower. Direct flow strips polyp extension. Indirect, randomized flow is ideal.
Temperature
76–80 °F (24–26.5 °C)
Salinity
1.025–1.026 SG (34–35 ppt)
pH
8.1–8.4
Alkalinity
8–10 dKH
Calcium
420–440 ppm
Magnesium
1,300–1,400 ppm
Feeding
Optional — accepts mysis, Reef Roids, LPS-targeted foods 1–2× per week. Photosynthetic. Direct-feed once a week max; over-feeding causes tissue recession.
Compatibility
Aggressive: 6+ inches sting range. Same-genus Euphyllia (frogspawn, hammer) usually safe to touch; mixing across genera is risky. Do NOT place near Galaxea, Goniopora, or chalices.
What kills it
Alkalinity swings (>1 dKH/day). Brown jelly disease following stress. Sudden flow change. Bristleworm infestation in the skeleton.
Common mistakes
- •Placing under direct powerhead flow — strips the polyp head.
- •Adding to a tank with unstable alkalinity (Euphyllia tip the chemistry hand).
- •Letting it touch non-Euphyllia LPS like chalices.
Equipment & food for this species
LPS appreciate weekly target-feeding. CoralRx dip on new frags catches brown jelly and bristleworm hitchhikers.
CoralRx Pro coral dip
Iodine-based dip. Kills AEFW, red bugs, flatworms.
