Acceptance of these terms

By accessing or using reefcalcs.com or any subdomain (collectively, the “Site”), you agree to be bound by these Terms of Use, the Disclaimer, and the Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, do not use the Site. These terms form a binding agreement between you and the operator of reefcalcs (“we,” “us,” “our”).

You represent that you are at least 18 years old, or 13 or older with the consent of a parent or legal guardian, and that you have the legal authority to enter into this agreement.

The short version

reefcalcs is free for personal and commercial use. Embed the calculators on your blog, reference the parameter pages in your forum posts, screenshot the dashboard for your reef Discord — go ahead. Don't scrape the site to rebuild a competing calculator, don't republish the calculator output as a paid product, and don't blame us if a dose goes sideways.

Permitted use

You may:

• Use the calculators for any personal or commercial reef-keeping decision, at your sole risk
• Embed any calculator via the published /embed/<name> iframe URL, on any site, provided the “Powered by ReefCalcs” attribution stays visible and clickable
• Link to any page on the Site without restriction
• Quote short excerpts of the parameter and guide content with attribution to reefcalcs.com

You may not:

• Programmatically extract, mirror, scrape, or otherwise harvest Site content for the purpose of reposting it, training a machine-learning model on it, or rebuilding a competing product
• Strip the “Powered by ReefCalcs” attribution from an embedded calculator
• Misrepresent reefcalcs content as your own original research
• Use the Site or its content to provide veterinary, medical, structural-engineering, or other professional advice — see the disclaimer
• Use the Site in any manner that could damage, disable, overburden, or impair our servers or networks, or interfere with any other party's use and enjoyment of the Site
• Attempt to gain unauthorised access to any portion of the Site, other accounts, computer systems, or networks

Content licence

Original prose and calculator logic on reefcalcs is provided for free editorial use with attribution. Quotations from primary sources (Randy Holmes-Farley, Bulk Reef Supply, Tropic Marin, Red Sea, Triton, peer-reviewed papers) are reproduced under fair use for educational purposes and remain subject to their original copyright. The CaribSea, Nature's Ocean, Instant Ocean, and other product names cited on the Site are the property of their respective trademark holders.

Embed widget terms

The /embed/<name> calculator iframes are provided as a free service. The host site must keep the “Powered by ReefCalcs” footer visible and clickable. We reserve the right to update the calculator implementation at any time; if a backwards-incompatible change is needed, the previous version will remain available at the same URL for at least 30 days, after which it may be removed without notice.

No warranty

THE SITE AND ALL CONTENT, CALCULATORS, AND MATERIALS ARE PROVIDED ON AN “AS IS” AND “AS AVAILABLE” BASIS WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, NON-INFRINGEMENT, OR ACCURACY. WE DO NOT WARRANT THAT THE SITE WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED OR ERROR-FREE, THAT DEFECTS WILL BE CORRECTED, OR THAT THE SITE IS FREE OF VIRUSES OR OTHER HARMFUL COMPONENTS.

Limitation of liability

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, IN NO EVENT SHALL THE OPERATOR OF REEFCALCS, ITS AFFILIATES, AGENTS, OR CONTRIBUTORS BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR ANY LOSS OF PROFITS, REVENUE, DATA, USE, GOODWILL, LIVESTOCK, OR PROPERTY ARISING OUT OF OR RELATED TO YOUR USE OF, OR INABILITY TO USE, THE SITE OR ITS CONTENT, WHETHER BASED ON WARRANTY, CONTRACT, TORT (INCLUDING NEGLIGENCE), OR ANY OTHER LEGAL THEORY, EVEN IF WE HAVE BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES.

IN ANY EVENT, OUR TOTAL CUMULATIVE LIABILITY ARISING OUT OF OR RELATED TO THIS AGREEMENT OR YOUR USE OF THE SITE SHALL NOT EXCEED ONE HUNDRED U.S. DOLLARS (US$100), OR THE AMOUNT YOU HAVE PAID US IN THE PRECEDING TWELVE MONTHS, WHICHEVER IS GREATER. THE FOREGOING LIMITATIONS WILL APPLY EVEN IF THE ABOVE-STATED REMEDY FAILS OF ITS ESSENTIAL PURPOSE.

Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion of certain warranties or limitation of liability for incidental or consequential damages. To the extent those laws apply, some of the above limitations may not apply to you.

Assumption of risk

You acknowledge that reef and aquarium chemistry involves inherent risks, including but not limited to: livestock loss, equipment failure, water damage, chemical burns, electrical hazards, and structural damage to your residence. You assume all such risks voluntarily and waive any claim against us arising from those risks.

Indemnification

You agree to defend, indemnify, and hold harmless reefcalcs, its operator, agents, and contributors from and against any and all claims, damages, obligations, losses, liabilities, costs, or debt, and expenses (including but not limited to attorney's fees) arising from: (i) your use of and access to the Site; (ii) your violation of any term of these Terms; (iii) your violation of any third-party right, including without limitation any copyright, property, or privacy right; or (iv) any claim that your use of the Site caused damage to a third party. This defence and indemnification obligation will survive these Terms and your use of the Site.

Governing law and venue

These Terms shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the State of New York, United States, without regard to its conflict-of-laws principles. You agree that any legal action or proceeding arising under or relating to these Terms shall be brought exclusively in the federal or state courts located in Suffolk County, New York, and you irrevocably consent to the personal jurisdiction and venue of those courts.

Dispute resolution and informal negotiation

Before filing any claim against us, you agree to attempt to resolve the dispute informally by contacting us at hello@reefcalcs.com. We will attempt to resolve the dispute through good-faith negotiation for at least thirty (30) days before either party initiates formal proceedings.

Class action waiver

YOU AND REEFCALCS AGREE THAT EACH MAY BRING CLAIMS AGAINST THE OTHER ONLY IN YOUR OR ITS INDIVIDUAL CAPACITY, AND NOT AS A PLAINTIFF OR CLASS MEMBER IN ANY PURPORTED CLASS OR REPRESENTATIVE PROCEEDING. Unless both you and we agree otherwise, no court may consolidate more than one person's claims or otherwise preside over any form of representative or class proceeding.

Time limitation on claims

Any cause of action or claim you may have arising out of or relating to these Terms or the Site must be commenced within one (1) year after the cause of action accrues. Otherwise such cause of action or claim is permanently barred.

Third-party links and content

The Site contains links to third-party websites and references to third-party products. We do not control, and are not responsible for, the content, accuracy, privacy practices, or opinions expressed on those external sites. The inclusion of any link or product reference does not imply our endorsement. Use of any linked site or referenced product is at your own risk.

Termination

We may terminate or suspend your access to the Site at any time, without prior notice or liability, for any reason, including breach of these Terms. Upon termination, your right to use the Site will immediately cease. Sections that by their nature should survive termination — including limitation of liability, indemnification, governing law, and dispute resolution — shall survive.

Severability

If any provision of these Terms is held to be invalid or unenforceable, that provision will be enforced to the maximum extent permissible and the remaining provisions will continue in full force and effect. The failure of either party to exercise any right provided for herein shall not be deemed a waiver of any further rights hereunder.

Entire agreement

These Terms, together with the Disclaimer and Privacy Policy, constitute the entire agreement between you and reefcalcs concerning the Site and supersede any prior or contemporaneous agreements.

Changes to these terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. The current version is the one you are reading, with the date stamped at the top. We will note material changes via the changelog or a notice on the Site. Continued use of the Site after a change constitutes acceptance of the revised Terms.
