Comparison
Deep sand bed vs Bare bottom
Deep sand beds (DSB) vs bare-bottom reef tanks compared on denitrification, detritus management, aesthetics, and risk. Both are valid setups — the right one depends on your filtration philosophy.
The contenders
Side A
Deep sand bed
4–6 in aragonite
Side B
Bare bottom
No substrate
Spec-by-spec
| Spec | Deep sand bed | Bare bottom |
|---|---|---|
Denitrification mechanism | Anaerobic bacteria in deep sand (4+ in) | None from substrate |
Detritus handling | Settles into sand — invisible but accumulates | Settles on glass — easy to siphon |
Aesthetic | Natural reef look | Industrial / frag-tank look |
Pest risk | Bristleworms, sand-dwelling pests propagate | Lower — fewer hiding places |
Risk of crash | Yes — old tank syndrome from bound P after 5+ years | Minimal |
pH/Ca contribution | Marginal — aragonite dissolves very slowly | None |
Fish that prefer it | Wrasses, jawfish, gobies, sand-sifters | None — many wrasses won't sleep without sand |
Plumbing implications | Don't blast sand with returns — fine substrate aerosolizes | Flow can be aggressive (no sand to stir up) |
Which one for which situation
Mixed reef with sand-dwelling fish (wrasses, jawfish)
Pick: Deep sand bed
Several fish species refuse to sleep, breed, or feed naturally without substrate.
SPS frag tank, maximum flow + nutrient control
Pick: Bare bottom
Bare bottom lets you run high-velocity flow without sand storms, and detritus comes out via siphon weekly.
Beginner, first reef
Pick: Deep sand bed
Sand looks like a reef. Aesthetic motivation matters for hobby retention.
Tank in service >5 years, considering substrate replacement
Pick: Bare bottom
Old DSBs can release bound phosphate when disturbed. A BB conversion ends that risk.
Shallow sand bed (1 inch, aesthetic only)
Pick: Neither
A 1-inch sand bed gives no denitrification (needs 4+ in for anaerobic zones) but adds detritus traps. Either go full DSB or BB.
