Zooxanthellae

Symbiotic dinoflagellate algae living in coral tissue. Provide ~80% of coral's energy via photosynthesis.

Genus Symbiodinium. When stress expels them, coral turns white — 'bleached.' Tissue can survive briefly without zoox; if not re-colonized, the coral dies.
